Client

For those of you who are running Windows in any form, we recommend ZMud, which is a very nice mud client, or GenewicMud. You will need to download these using one of our links here, but ensure you bookmark us so you can get back here for steps on how to play Harshlands with a mud client.

JAVA CLIENT
Java Connect to Harshlands

TELNET
Telnet to Harshlands

MAC OSX
Savitar

WINDOWS CLIENTS

ZMud
CMud
Simplemu
MushClient
GMud

Connecting

For those using ZMud or a normal telnet client, make sure you are including the port address of 5555 as it will not connect without that. For example, when I am using Linux to connect to Harshlands, I type "telnet mud.harshlands.net 5555" to connect.

TITLE
HOST
PORT
DIKU
ADDRESS

: Harshlands
: mud.harshlands.net
: 5555 (or 23 and 8080)

: 72.64.68.92 or mud.harshlands.net

Help with ZMUD/GMUD?

Okay, you're connecting to harshlands and the first thing it asks you for is a Name. If you type in a name and it asks for a password then that name is already in use. Close your session, restart your MUD program and connect again and use another name. Now ZMUD has an option where it will auto input your name and password, I suggest not accepting that option until you are sure your name and password is going to be accepted. Just click the Stop asking button when ZMUD pops up that screen.

When you choose a name that isn't in use it will ask you Do you want to create a character named <Blank> Y/N. Choose yes, input a password, ensure you write both down and you're on your way.

If you are unable to connect at all and have not been able to solve it yourself, please send an email to the staff AT harshlands.net and they will try to help you in any way that they can.

Account Creation

Harshlands has an account system, which means you create an account and then you create a character which is associated with your account.  This allows the staff to track who your previous characters were and get an idea of your role-playing experience in Harshlands.  The name of your account should not be your character name.  Create your account and your password will be emailed to you.  It will be emailed immediately so if you do not get the account email the same day email staff AT harshlands.net and tell us the account you created.

Character Creation

Harshlands has a very detailed character creation process. When you login to your account and create a character it will ask you for a name for your character, this name cannot already exist in the game, nor should it be a known fantasy name like Gandalf, etc.  When it asks you if you wish to create a character by this name you choose yes.

When you're ready to create a character, choose that option and follow all the instructions carefully. The following is a break down of the statistics and what they mean in game.

str : Strength - The physical strength of your character.
dex : Dexterity - The hand/eye coordination of your character.
agi : Agility - The natural agility of your character
con : Constitution - The health and stamina of your character
wil : Willpower - Your character's mental fortitude and faith.
int : Intelligence - Your character's reasoning ability.
aur : Aura - Your character's aptitude for magic.
spd : Speed - Your character's running ability.
eye : Eyesight - Your character's clarity of vision.
hrg : Hearing - Your character's ability to hear.
smt : Smell/Taste - Your character's sense of smell and taste.
tch : Touch - Your character's tactile sensitivity.
vce : Voice - Your character's vocal abilities.
com : Comeliness - Your character's physical beauty.

Awaiting Approval

After you've created your character you may have to wait a day or so before it is accepted or before the staff tells you what is not acceptable about your character. You will receive an email when your character has been reviewed. When your character is accepted you will enter the new player area. Look around and get comfortable with interacting in the MUD before you make any major decisions.  Typing Help is always good if you don't know how to do something.

Taking a look at the Policies that the game runs by is helpful as well.

A few Commands

Help

This will always help you if you read deeply enough. Just haul up in a corner somewhere and read until you know how to do all and see all.

Help Socials

A whole list of single word commands are listed here for you to experiment with.

Score

This tells a bit about your character. His religion, his status whether sitting or standing, his combat mode, etc.

Commands

For a complete list of commands available to you in the world use this.

Look
Look<object/person>
Look person item

Allows you to see what is in your current area or look at an object or person. Also allows you look at the description of items worn or carried by a person.

Petition all<message>
Petition<name><message>

My favorite command. If there is an Immortal/GM online you can ask them questions or request that they animate a non player character in the game.

Talk<message>

Allows you to speak to people at the table you are sitting at.
Ex. talk Thank you for inviting me to the table.

Say<message>

Allows you to speak out loud in an area so everyone can hear you.

Yell<message>

Allows you to yell into adjacent rooms/areas that are connected to the one you are currently in.

Tell<person><message>

Allows you to pinpoint a person to say something to. Everyone will hear it, but they will know that you are talking to someone in particular.
Ex. tell Byron Who are you?

Whisper<person><message>

Allows you to pinpoint a person to whisper something to. Unless a person has the Listen skill they won't hear anything you say to the recipient..

Inventory

Will tell you what you have in your inventory, a sort of area that hovers about your character. It is assumed these items are held in your arms in a bundle.

Equipment

Will tell you what you are wearing or have held firmly in a hand.

North, East, South, West, Up, Down, Enter<name>, Leave<name>,  Exit, Tables, Sit, Sit<object>, Stand, Sleep, Rest

These commands allow you to move in the MUD world, get into places, etc.

Open<object><direction>
Close<object><direction>

It's nice to be able to enter a room that has a door and close it behind you.
Ex open door west

Wear<item>
Remove<item>
Hold<item>
Wield<item>
Light<item>
Light <item> off

Things will automatically default to where they are supposed to be. If you wear a helmet, it will go on your head. If you Remove a belt it will take it off your waist and put it in your inventory. Note you need to have your light source in your inventory and not a hand for it to illuminate things.

Count

Allows you to count the money in your inventory.

List

Shows what a merchant has to sell if he is in the room with you.

Buy<item>, Sell<item>, Value<item>

Allows you to buy, sell, etc when you find out what a merchant sells or wants to buy.

Look board
Read<message number>
Erase<message number>
Write board<message subject>

Interacting with boards in the game especially as a newbie is an important part of the game. Being able to read the ooc board and the ic boards to know what is going on is always helpful. Sometimes a board is actually some people, so rather than 'look board' it will be 'look gossipers' or 'look rumor' etc. So ensure you try things out.

1. Put the tin of oil on the ground
2. 'fill lantern tin'

Filling lanterns is something a bit new, so I thought I would add it here. The oil tin needs to be lying on the ground and you need to have your lantern in your inventory, then you can fill the lantern from the tin.

Entering the World

You start the game with little, even less if you didn't read the instructions. I suggest you try to petition an Immortal to talk about your character concept. Most likely you'll be in the city of Tashal in the kingdom of Kaldor. Of course you're going to want to start off role-playing as soon as possible and get into the swing of things, so feel free to explore a bit. Just remember that this is a realistic world. If you attack someone, they will call for the guards, if you steal from someone, expect to be labeled as a thief.

You have a bit of coin and there are clothing shops in the game, as well as places where you can buy other items like lanterns, boots, packs, weapons, etc. Maybe you wish to stay wearing rags like a peasant, but some like to show a bit of class. Budget yourself until you know how much things cost and then shop around for the best deal. Some things are cheaper at different places/shops.

Okay, so you've done some shopping, maybe talked to a couple of other players as you looked about Tashal and got used to your surroundings and how to interact with them. Now maybe its time to get involved. You could go and try to join up with one of the clans in the game and be a part of a group, or you may wish to explore alone a bit more before you commit yourself.

Whatever you decide to do there are plenty of interesting characters to meet in the world of Harshlands.

Keep it Harsh, Harshlanders!
